Christmas Party Notes

Christmas party notes were sent home today in your child's gold folder. I'm sorry for the delay in getting these out. We had the flu go through our family last week, and I was absent for two days because of it.

The party is this Friday, set up begins at 1:45, and I am hoping that we can be finished with the party and clean-up by 2:50. If you would like to help, but haven't sent me a note, please do so as soon as possible. The only requirement for parent helpers is that you must have a background check on file in the office. Also, no younger siblings at the party please.

Remember, there is NO gift exchange among the students this year.

Reading Counts Updates

Here it is the beginning of November and we are moving right along with Reading Counts. We have 6 children who have read over 30,000 words (one more who is close to it), and 6 children who have read over 50,000 words (one of these is very close to 100,000!), and 1 child who has read OVER 100,000 words! Exciting!! Keep reading Everybody!!

Cursive

We have started cursive in our classroom, yea!! I am having children tell me that they have been practicing at home. I would prefer that children NOT practice letters until we have learned them in class. Once a child gets used to forming a letter a certain way, it is hard to get them to form the letter the way that the handwriting book teaches. I know this sounds trivial, but it really makes a difference in correct letter formation. Around December, I will begin working with each child on the letters in their name so that they can THEN begin writing their name in cursive. Thanks for your understanding with this.

Parent Teacher Conferences

It was very nice getting to meet with so many parents. It's always nice for me to put faces to the names that I hear so much about from your children. I get good insight from parents too, and I appreciate that so much.

Thanks again for making the time to come in and meet with me!

Raz-Kids and SumDog

If you didn't catch it, I sent home information yesterday regarding websites that I have our class signed up for. Raz-kids is a website that will help with reading comprehension and fluency, and Sumdog is a website that will help with math.

The login for both of these websites is the exact same. This is so the children aren't having to memorize a bunch of different logins.

I had a few children come to me to say that they didn't have a computer or internet. I told them to keep their information in case they ever go to a relative's house that they can use a computer at. We also we be exploring these websites at school too, so your children will not be missing out by not doing these at home!

Thank you!!

Thank you to the chaperones who attended our field trip to Buckley Homestead:
Mrs. Wheeler, Mrs. Ware, Mrs. Revolt, Mrs. Trivette, and Mrs. Clemens.

If you were not selected to attend, remember that we can have unlimited parents to help with our parties, and we also have another field trip coming up in the spring. Make sure that your background check is current if you would like to help out with anything.

Book-It

Book-It calendars are going home on Tuesday. Please note, this starts on October 1st.

Homework Work Habits

As we are getting further into the school year, homework is beginning to pick up. Please note that any paper in the RED folder is homework, and it needs to be completed and RETURNED TO SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY.

It would be a good work habit to start to have your child put each paper back into the red folder as it is completed. So often I hear, "Mom didn't put it back into the folder when I finished it last night." This may seem very harsh of me, but it is vital that good work habits be established before these children go into 3rd grade.

The number of children not bringing back homework is increasing, and they are moving clips down and missing recess because of it. Please help your child get into the habit of packing up that red folder every night, so he or she is prepared for school the next day.

Buckley Homestead Field Trip

We will be going to Buckley Homestead THIS Friday, September 27th. This entire trip is outside, so please watch the weather and dress your child accordingly. It's supposed to be beautiful, but you never know with our Indiana weather!!

Please make sure that your child has comfortable shoes (no flip-flops) as we do a lot of walking on this trip. Also, each child will need a sack lunch, no lunch boxes please! (It is much easier to just throw everything away.)

Progress Reports

Progress reports will be emailed out to parents tomorrow. Those without email should expect to see a paper copy come home with their child.

It was very nice to meet so many families at Open House last week. I was able to visit and spend some time with a few families, but some I was only able to manage a quick hello. I apologize for that. Just know that my door is always open, if you have questions or concerns, PLEASE - don't hesitate to contact me!! My contact info again is:

Reading Tests

The reading tests that we do over our reading stories will not be on paper anymore. With the new reading series, and to keep up with the times, all reading tests over the story from the textbook, will be taken on the computer. On Harmony, you will be able to access the final grade. On the reading series website (www.pearsonsuccessnet.com), you will be able to log in and check out what your child actually missed. The information is grouped by skills. I did send home log-in information for this website earlier. If you need that info again, please just drop me a line.

Library

We go to the school library every week on Tuesday. Your child must return his/her book before getting a new one. Please make sure that these have either been returned, or that they are in the book-bag on Tuesday morning to be returned.

The Hebron Book Club meets for the first time this Friday morning (9/13). Children should be dropped off to the school around 7:25. If you would like for your child to participate, don't forget to send in the permission form that went home last week.

Field Trip Notes

Field trips notes are going home today. Please turn these back in as soon as possible. I like to draw names for chaperones, and I want to give everyone who wants to attend the trip a chance to be put in the drawing. I would like to do the drawing NEXT MONDAY (Sept. 9th), so that those who have been chosen can have a chance to take the day off from work. Thanks for your understanding with this :)

Off to a good start!

Whew! We've been in school for almost two weeks now, and with Labor Day behind us, we are settling in for the long haul!

Starting this week, you should see regular routines start to take place. We will soon be doing extra homework, too, once I start sending home reading sheets (probably next week).

I would like to thank all of the parents who helped to ease things along by sending in all the needed supplies as well as all of the beginning of the year forms that needed to be filled out. I know it was a lot of work, but I do appreciate the info. Some children did not bring in all of their supplies. We do use 2 boxes of crayons, and 2 bottles of glue. We are busy second graders. If your child only brought in one, I will probably send home a reminder letter as the need for the second box of crayons (or bottle of glue) arises.
